The Charging Server supports pre and post-paid charging models and has a built-in funds reservation model which supports real-time unit and time based charging. This makes it ideal for services and applications that are delivered in the cloud or require charging on per use, or per transaction basis.

Its billing function produces fully itemised electronic bills on regular intervals for accounts which have multiple users.

An integrated web based portal allows account holders to monitor the status of their account while operators have full management access over the accounts.

The engineering was a combination of software design followed by a mammoth testing effort. It took 2-3 engineers 12 months to complete the effort from concept to product.

The software engineering effort focussed on:

• High performance, transactional and real-time charging engine based on J2EE technologies.
• Billing engine based on XML technologies.
• Custom, XML-based, protocol as interface for clients and Java based client which dramatically reduces integration time.
• Two different web based portals that provide the main access to the server for account holders and server operators over the Internet. We used J2EE technologies such as Spring, Acegi and Hibernate for the portals.

The testing effort focused on comprehensive functional and performance testing. The end result was over 5000 automated test cases which basically test every aspect of the server to make sure that it is working as a reliable and accurate charging and billing engine.
