Traffic Collector is an appliance type communication device that is capable of collecting packets of different protocols from up to 4 different points on any TCP/IP network and then distributing copies of the packets to four different destinations. The device is completely transparent to the network it operates on and does not modify the packets that it collects in any way.

The Traffic Collector has proven very useful in network monitoring, network and business security and traffic logging (including VoIP call recording) situations. It is an all solid state device and was designed to “deploy and forget” operational scenarios.

The engineering endeavour was a combination of hardware selection and software design. It took 2 engineers 12 months to complete the effort from concept to a product that is in production today.

The product selection effort focused on evaluation of a number of Atom and VIA embedded processor boards from a number of manufacturers. Correct operation of our custom embedded Linux distribution was one of the primary evaluation concerns.

The software engineering effort focussed on:

• Custom embedded Linux distribution;
• Web based management interface.
• Protocol packet dissectors and collectors for a number of protocols including H.323, SIP, SDP, RTP, MSCML, TPKT and others.
• Packet replication and distribution engine.
